Quick mental maths: knock off three zeros and divide by 18.1 to get US dollars. For example, IDR 100,000 ≈ $5.52. Price tags often say "50K" for IDR 50,000 and "1jt" (juta) for a million.
Where to exchange money in Bali
- Use only authorised money changers: look for a company name starting with PT and the Bank Indonesia licence on the sign, such as the BMC and Central Kuta chains. Count your money at the counter before you leave.
- Avoid street booths advertising rates well above the market and "no commission": short-changing is a classic trick.
- Crisp, new, large notes (USD 100, EUR 100 without tears or marks) get the best rate.
- Bali rules require payments in rupiah: cash, card or QRIS. Prices quoted in dollars are converted at the seller's rate.
ATMs, cards and fees
- A single withdrawal with a foreign card is usually limited to IDR 2–3 million: machines with IDR 50,000 notes give less, those with IDR 100,000 notes more.
- Bank Mandiri has charged IDR 50,000 per withdrawal with a foreign Visa or Mastercard since 22 February 2026. BCA and BNI often charge no fee of their own, but your bank may still charge one.
- If the ATM or card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency (dynamic currency conversion), decline and choose rupiah: DCC costs several per cent more.
- Use ATMs inside bank branches, malls and supermarkets, cover the keypad and skip any machine with loose or glued-on parts: card skimming gangs are regularly arrested in Bali.
- Wise and Revolut cards work well for payments and withdrawals.
- QRIS, Indonesia's QR payment standard, is accepted almost everywhere from warungs to taxis. Visitors from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan and South Korea can pay with their own banking apps.
Frequently asked questions
Should I bring dollars or euros to Bali?
Either works. US dollars and euros are exchanged everywhere; bring clean, recent large notes for the best rate, or rely on a low-fee card and withdraw rupiah from ATMs.
How much is the Bali tourist levy in dollars?
IDR 150,000, about $8.27 at the current rate. It is paid once per trip on the official Love Bali website or app.
Why does the rupiah have so many zeros?
The rupiah lost much of its value in the 1998 Asian financial crisis. The largest note is IDR 100,000, and price tags often drop the zeros: 50K means IDR 50,000.
